McKinstry Names “Champions of Sustainability” Winners At 2022 WOHESC Conference
Three higher education sustainability leaders recognized for championing sustainability in the built environment.
SEATTLE (March 04, 2022) — McKinstry, a national leader in designing, constructing, operating and maintaining high-performing buildings, honored three leaders as Champions of Sustainability for their dedication to promoting sustainability in the built environment during the 2022 Washington & Oregon Higher Education Sustainability Conference (WOHESC).
The Champions of Sustainability program recognizes organizations and individuals exhibiting a forward-looking approach to innovative energy and waste reduction in the built environment, which contributes nearly 40% of total global energy-related carbon emissions.
Monica J. Stenzel of Spokane Falls Community College, Zeen Vincent of Cal Poly Humboldt and Jim Simon of Gonzaga University were each honored for their exemplary achievements and commitment to advance sustainability through efficiency, conservation and direct action at their respective college or university.
- Monica J. Stenzel is the founding director of the Sustainability Center and a member of the history faculty at Spokane Falls Community College, where she researches historical models of sustainability. As a dedicated proponent of interdisciplinary collaboration, she incorporates traditional materials and craftsmanship in coursework, as well as a focus on the destructiveness of empire and consumerism. Stenzel has prioritized the partnership of faculty, facilities, students, and staff to build a sustainable culture through campus and community action.
- Zeen Vincent is a student staff member at Cal Poly Humboldt. He is involved on campus with Associated Students as the elected Environmental Sustainability Officer for 2021-22. He also works with the Humboldt Energy Independence Fund as a student worker on the Ethnobotanical Mapping Project on campus. Vincent is majoring in Environmental Studies with an emphasis in community organizing. During his time at Cal Poly Humboldt he has advocated for sustainability and environmental justice and will continue to advocate into the future.
- Jim Simon, who serves as the Director of Sustainability at Gonzaga University, where he works to create a culture of sustainability and advance our goal of becoming carbon neutral by 2050. Simon works to balance Gonzaga’s best intentions with its best practices and is proud of the achievements that span his time at the University that include securing free bus passes for all students and employees, stewarding the submission of an AASHE STARS Gold rating, and supporting the sustainability leadership programming that has impacted over 100 students, employees, and community members.
“We congratulate Monica, Zeen and Jim for their inspiring leadership in championing sustainability in higher education and their communities,” said McKinstry Director of Corporate Social Impact Ashley Ruiz. “We are proud to work alongside leaders like these to make a difference on campuses across the country.”
The 2022 Champions of Sustainability awards are presented in collaboration with the annual Washington & Oregon Higher Education Sustainability Conference (WOHESC). More information about WOHESC can be found at www.wohesc.org.
