McKinstry and Gonzaga Partner to Build New Pathways for Future Engineers

Gonzaga University and McKinstry have worked alongside each other for years through student design projects, scholarships and a steady pipeline of graduates entering the industry. A new partnership now builds on that foundation, focusing on one goal: supporting the next generation of engineers while strengthening the region’s workforce.

McKinstry’s longstanding support for Gonzaga students is growing through scholarships, research opportunities and senior design project funding. Additional scholarship commitments, including those honoring Gonzaga President Emeritus Thayne McCulloh, expand access for students pursuing engineering degrees. These investments will help students afford school, participate in hands-on learning and explore research that connects directly to industry needs.

“Gonzaga students and graduates bring talent, curiosity and purpose to the work ahead,” said McKinstry Chief Executive Officer Dean Allen. “This partnership creates clear and meaningful pathways from the classroom to industry.”

The collaboration also includes a new engineering career pipeline that gives selected students the chance to complete paid internships, work with McKinstry mentors and potentially transition directly into full-time roles. Students will have learning opportunities inside McKinstry buildings, where mechanical, electrical, plumbing and technology systems operate in real time.

“This partnership reinforces Gonzaga’s commitment to preparing ethical, globally minded engineers who are ready to lead,” said Gonzaga President Katia Passerini. “It connects academic excellence with workforce needs in a way that benefits students and the region alike.”

The Inland Northwest is seeing growing demand for skilled engineers to advance clean energy and infrastructure projects. McKinstry’s Action for Impact strategy recognizes that building a strong and diverse technical workforce is essential to addressing these challenges. Working with Gonzaga helps create a clearer path for students who want careers in the built environment and offers employers a more prepared talent pool.

With many Gonzaga alumni already contributing across McKinstry teams, the partnership builds on shared values and a long history of collaboration. It offers a model that other universities and employers can adapt to help students gain experience, support regional economic health and contribute to a stronger future workforce.
