McKinstry Honored at 2023 ASHRAE Technology Awards for Expedia and Washington State University Projects

Awards recognize innovation and design excellence for building systems.

SEATTLE, Wash. (March 10, 2023) – The American Society of Heating, Refrigerating and Air-Conditioning Engineers (ASHRAE) awarded McKinstry two, second-place technology awards for Expedia’s Seattle Headquarters and Washington State University’s North Puget Sound campus.

The ASHRAE Technology Awards recognize outstanding achievements by members who successfully apply innovative building designs, incorporating ASHRAE standards for effective energy management, indoor air quality and overall innovative systems design.

The Expedia Campus and Central Plant Renovation in Seattle converted an existing research campus into a new headquarters. The existing architecture and utility plant were retrofitted to meet the new programming and performance goals. This included adding a building envelope to the existing architecture and installing high-efficiency building systems. Thanks to our partners at GLY Construction for their partnership in bringing Expedia’s vision to life!

The Washington State University project created an efficient and sustainable new home for the university’s North Puget Sound campus in Everett, Washington. The LEED Gold-certified facility is powered by an all-electric heat pump plan and supplemented by a 78 kW rooftop photovoltaic array. The building also utilizes a heat recovery system from the building’s data center to provide radiant slab heating to the Innovation Forum, a four-story atrium at the heart of the building. Other unique features include a 20,000-gallon cistern that captures rainwater and repurposes the water for 100% of the toilet and urinal flushing demand between September and June. This zero-energy-ready space was delivered by our partners at Hoffman Construction Company.

Congratulations to the clients, partners and project teams on this exciting achievement!
