Advancing Education Equity & Access for Underserved Youth

In alignment with McKinstry’s commitment to our communities and to diversity, equity and inclusion, we launched two exciting new initiatives in 2023 that introduce underserved youth to careers in the construction and STEM industries.

Beginning in January, McKinstry and the Washington Alliance for Better Schools (WABS) partnered to host Family STEM nights at 24 schools across the Seattle region and provide BIPOC, refugee, and immigrant students and families the opportunity to connect with McKinstry professionals and have fun creating a STEM project together.

In May, the Washington Alliance for Better Schools honored McKinstry with the Distinguished Education Partner of the Year Award. Adam Gloss, a WABS board member, and senior vice president, Service, accepted the award. “By partnering with WABS to introduce students to STEM careers — particularly BIPOC, refugee, and immigrant students — and creating pathways to those careers, we are lifting up future generations and strengthening communities. At the same time, we’re also creating a pipeline of talent in careers that we need for our own success,” said Adam.

In July, McKinstry partnered with Highline Public Schools to host our inaugural Heavy Metal Summer Experience (HMSE) camp for students to learn more about opportunities in the construction skilled trades by working alongside McKinstry skilled craftworkers in our Seattle fabrication shop.
