2023 McKinstry Heavy Metal Summer Experience
The 2023 McKinstry Heavy Metal Summer Experience introduced high school students to union career opportunities in the skilled construction trades including sheet metal, plumbing, piping and HVAC services. This six week program, led by McKinstry skilled trades workers at our state-of-the-art fabrication shop, allowed for students to deepen their knowledge in the industry, complete hands on projects and visit active job sites.
Throughout the duration of this program, students had the opportunity to tour Local 32 and Local 66 JATC training facilities where they were able to gain valuable insight into entering the apprentice programs and actively engage in hands on projects in pipe-cutting, welding and more! Along with this, the students also had the opportunity to visit the University of Washington Power Plant, having the opportunity to delve into the power plant’s history, tour boiler rooms and explore an impressive network of tunnels spanning nearly eight miles. As we conclude this enriching experience, we are grateful to have been able to celebrate these students hard work and commitment over the past six weeks through this program’s graduation.
