Modernizing Lumen Field With Zero Disruptions

Working in close coordination with the Lumen Field facilities team, McKinstry delivered a comprehensive upgrade across the stadium and event center, replacing and refurbishing nearly 280 pieces of equipment that support heating and cooling throughout indoor spaces. The work included nearly 170 water source heat pumps along with upgrades to fluid coolers, pumps, air systems and controls. These improvements enhanced system performance, efficiency and reliability while preparing the facility for continued high-demand use, including large-scale national and global events.

With events taking place up to 362 days a year and crowds that can exceed 70,000 people, shutting down operations was not an option. Construction progressed alongside daily activity, with project teams often restoring spaces between phases so they were ready for the next event. Crews worked through suites, concourses and back-of-house areas in tightly coordinated sequences, balancing speed with precision in an environment that could not slow down.

“One of the goals was to make sure that all of our fans and guests had a great experience and did not know McKinstry was here,” said Kathy Brown, managing director of project development at Lumen Field. “The team worked hand in hand with our operations staff and stayed engaged to help us resolve issues as they came up.”

As crews worked through the building’s complex and decentralized systems, they partnered closely with Lumen Field’s operations staff to address challenges in real time and resolve underlying issues as they were uncovered. The project also included electrical and controls upgrades, duct cleaning and targeted refurbishments to extend the life of existing equipment, including large packaged units that were not originally in scope. This collaborative approach helped ensure the improvements delivered value beyond the initial project.

“We stayed engaged beyond the original scope, working with the team to not only replace the HVAC system, but also address underlying issues and leave the facility better than we found it,” said Kyle Victor, business unit manager for the Special Projects Group at McKinstry.

Today, the upgraded HVAC system supports a more efficient, reliable and serviceable facility. Improvements to system layout and access make maintenance easier, with a long-term service partnership supporting continued performance.
