Seattle Colleges Sets the Standard for Clean, Efficient and Sustainable Campuses
For more than a decade, Seattle Colleges has stood at the forefront of sustainability, proving higher education can lead the way in creating a cleaner, more efficient future. In partnership with McKinstry, the Colleges have transformed campuses into models of energy stewardship, demonstrating that bold leadership and smart planning can deliver benefits far beyond compliance.
Seattle Colleges has advanced major initiatives that position the institutions as a statewide example for navigating Washington’s Clean Buildings Performance Standard (CBPS) and preparing its largest facilities for long‑term decarbonization. This work is not just about meeting legislative requirements. It is about creating lasting value for students, staff and the community.
To support Seattle Colleges’ energy, carbon and compliance goals, McKinstry delivered a districtwide assessment and planning effort that created a clear, actionable pathway toward full CBPS compliance:
- Audited 19 buildings across North, Central and South campuses to evaluate energy performance, equipment condition and carbon‑reduction opportunities.
- Developed two districtwide decarbonization plans establishing a phased, strategic approach to reducing emissions.
- Created detailed compliance roadmaps outlining steps the district will take to meet Clean Buildings Standard requirements through 2030 and beyond.
- Advanced energy management efforts, including updates to energy management plans and operational best practices.
- Identified more than $300,000 and 2.5 million kWh in annual potential energy savings across the portfolio.
These insights provided Seattle Colleges with a strong, data‑driven foundation for planning upgrades and prioritizing investments.
In 2023, Seattle Central completed lighting and controls upgrades in the Science and Math Building. The facility with laboratory classrooms was previously operating without controls for years. The energy savings were significant and the project quickly became a standout example of what targeted improvements can achieve. This work recently unlocked a major milestone: Seattle Central officially secured its Tier 1 Early Adopter Incentive Program (EAIP) incentive— one of the earliest Tier 1 awards in the state.
The project also leveraged multiple funding streams, including Seattle City Light incentives, a Department of Commerce grant and Puget Sound Energy rebates—allowing the College to stretch every dollar further.
Impact Across the Campuses
- Zero Net Cost: By leveraging nearly $800,000 in Department of Commerce funding, tax credits and utility incentives, Seattle Colleges implemented upgrades without burdening its budget.
- Energy & Water Savings: LED lighting retrofits, rooftop solar, advanced HVAC controls and water efficiency measures now save the district more than $250,000 annually.
- Comfort & Learning: Improved building performance means better classroom environments, reinforcing the Colleges’ commitment to student success.
- Reinvestment in Education: Every dollar saved on energy is a dollar that can be redirected to academic programs and student services.
Seattle Colleges’ leadership shows what is possible when public institutions embrace change. Their proactive approach to compliance and decarbonization sets a benchmark for others navigating Washington’s Clean Buildings legislation. These efforts pave the way for future phases of renewable energy generation and deeper carbon reduction, aligned with the state’s 2030 energy goals.
Seattle Colleges is a champion in the clean energy movement. By turning challenges into opportunities, the Colleges have proven that sustainability and education go hand in hand, creating a legacy that benefits students, the community and the planet.
