Salado ISD Upgrades Learning Environments While Boosting Energy Savings
McKinstry partnership will upgrade existing schools while saving the district $180,000 annually in utility and operational costs
SALADO, Texas (August 29, 2019) — With a growing student population and a need to provide high-quality learning environments, the Salado Independent School District decided to pursue an innovative, multi-pronged solution.
While a successful 2018 bond measure allowed the district to begin construction on new school facilities—such as the new Salado Middle School, scheduled to open in 2020—the district also realized that updating its existing facilities was vital to serving its students.
As a result, the district is working with McKinstry to perform extensive energy retrofits that will save the district approximately $180,000 annually in utility and operational costs. McKinstry began the energy retrofits in August and expects to complete all work by the end of 2019.
Operating within a predefined $3.29 million budget, this energy savings performance contract (ESPC) project is providing an efficient and cost-effective way to improve learning environments at no cost to taxpayers. The energy and utility cost savings, guaranteed by McKinstry, will pay for all energy retrofit work performed.
“Serving our students is everyone’s top priority at Salado ISD,” said Superintendent Dr. Michael Novotny. “This project is a fiscally responsible way to improve our facilities and tackle deferred maintenance to make sure they’re optimized for learning—now and for the long haul.”
Specific upgrades included in this district-wide project include LED lighting retrofits, HVAC system improvements, controls system upgrades and energy-saving power factor correction for a variety of equipment.
“With better-lit and more comfortable learning spaces on the way, Salado is following through on its promise to provide facilities that are as high-performing as its students, teachers and staff,” said McKinstry Account Executive Devin Castleton. “We’re proud to partner with the district on this innovative project that will save energy and upgrade school facilities at no cost to taxpayers.”
