McKinstry Celebrates $1 Million in Equity and Social Justice Giving
In 2020, McKinstry launched our five-year Action for Impact plan to address the climate, affordability and equity crises. Central to this plan is our commitment to share a social responsibility to positively contribute to the future of our communities. This year, the McKinstry Charitable Foundation reached an equity and social justice philanthropic giving milestone of $1 million.
This investment goes to more than 257 nonprofits nationwide, driving impact in a broad range of areas including food security, human and civil rights, racial justice, gender equity, LGBTQ+ equity, disability rights, veterans support and economic justice. A significant portion of the funds were directed through our employee-led People’s Choice campaigns, where staff and union team members direct funds toward the causes they care about most.
“Philanthropy plays a critical role in our communities, supporting nonprofit organizations to execute their missions with excellence,” said Ashley Ruiz, vice president of McKinstry and executive director of the McKinstry Charitable Foundation. “We are proud to partner with so many impactful organizations nationwide that are advancing equity and social justice.”
Over the past five years, our funding has helped support nonprofits making a lasting difference. Here’s a closer look at a few of them:
- Apprenticeship and Non-Traditional Employment for Women (ANEW): ANEW improves access and advancement for women and underrepresented communities in the construction skilled trades through pre-apprenticeship training, career readiness, and retention services to help individuals secure and thrive in family-wage careers.
- Project Worthmore: Through initiatives like English language classes, family partnerships, food access programs, and dental care, Project Worthmore is dedicated to restoring dignity and fostering inclusion for refugees in the Denver area.
- Mary’s Place Seattle: Through emergency shelters, mobile outreach, and prevention programs, Mary’s Place provides safe housing, essential resources, and support services that promote stability, dignity, and long-term well-being for families experiencing homelessness.
- Spokane Neighborhood Action Partners (SNAP): SNAP empowers low-income individuals and families in the Spokane region through services such as energy assistance, financial counseling, housing support, and small business development.
- The Trevor Project Inc: The Trevor Project advances advocacy, education, peer support, crisis support, and research to create a safer, more inclusive world where LGBTQ+ youth feel valued and supported.
We are proud to have contributed $1 million toward initiatives advancing equity and social justice with these organizations and hundreds of others nationwide who are working every day to build a bright future for all.
