McKinstry Strengthens Zero Energy and Engineering Capabilities with Two New Hires

Brad Liljequist and Jim Grimm bolster McKinstry’s engineering leadership and technical expertise

SEATTLE and PORTLAND, Ore. (Sept. 24, 2018) — McKinstry is expanding its zero energy and engineering capabilities with the addition of Brad Liljequist and Jim Grimm, two seasoned industry veterans. Liljequist now serves as McKinstry’s zero energy senior program manager and Grimm now serves as engineering manager for McKinstry’s Oregon team.

“The built environment is evolving as we design grid-optimal buildings that feature renewable energy to balance demand with available resources,” said Michael Frank, McKinstry’s vice president of engineering and design. “Brad and Jim are experts in this emerging world of building design, and they position McKinstry to exceed our client needs and solve the built environment challenge by drawing on their decades of experience and thought leadership.”

Liljequist comes to McKinstry after five years directing the Zero Energy Program at the International Living Future Institute (ILFI). He also directed development of zHome, the first multifamily zero energy community in the United States, and is the author of “The Power of Zero,” a 2016 book that showcases zero energy buildings.

Liljequist has three decades of experience catalyzing change in the fields of planning, environmental policy, urban design, construction management, lean operations and sustainable building. He is a zero energy pioneer who speaks, teaches and consults regularly on zero energy buildings and communities—helping to create a world that can thrive without fossil fuels.

“My focus has always been on innovating in the built environment to address climate change, and McKinstry shares that mission,” Liljequist explained. “McKinstry is already designing and constructing zero energy and zero carbon buildings, and I’m excited to further expand our efforts in the market.”

Liljequist will be working to continue developing McKinstry’s expertise in grid-optimal building design, photovoltaics and other renewable energy technologies. He’ll also be contributing to cutting-edge McKinstry projects like the zero energy Catalyst Building.

Grimm comes to McKinstry after decades of experience at engineering and design-build firms in Hawaii and the Pacific Northwest. He has an extensive background with engineering buildings in the medical, residential and commercial spheres, as well as leading engineering teams.

“My goal is to grow our engineering team in Oregon,” Grimm said. “As engineers, we’re at our best when we collaborate with all the teams who construct a building, so McKinstry’s wide range of capabilities and commitment to collaboration makes it a perfect fit.”
