Hazelwood Captures the Spotlight at 2018 NSBA Annual Conference

The Midwest shined bright at the 2018National School Boards Association (NSBA) annual conference in San Antonio, Texas! With support from McKinstry, the Hazelwood East High School Girls’ Choir from St. Louis, Mo. captivated the national audience, commanding two standing ovations during their 15-minute performance.

A video of the performance is available to view here online.

The NSBA conference is a national event that brings education leaders together to help shape the future of education. The association represents state school board associations and their more than 90,000 local school board members.

NSBA invites student music groups to perform each year at its annual conference. Performing groups must represent a public school, have school board approval to represent their school district, and submit an audition tape for review by the selection committee. Hazelwood was the only choir chosen in 2018.

“I am very proud of our students for their hard work and for receiving this national recognition,” said Dr. Nettie Collins-Hart, superintendent of Hazelwood School District. “Recognition from the National School Boards Association is a tremendous honor. More importantly, representing the 18,000 students of the Hazelwood School District is to be admired.”

Hazelwood requested corporate support for the Hazelwood East Choir’s trip. McKinstry immediately answered the call, sponsoring the trip and hosting a dinner reception for the choir and its accompanying chaperones.

“We recognize that schools cannot do it alone,” said Dr. Collins-Hart. “For this reason, one of our goals is to build coalition and capacity in our schools. We appreciate the generous donation and support of McKinstry for helping to make this trip possible, and a memorable experience for our students.”

McKinstry also presented each choir participant with a certificate of recognition during a recent school board meeting. The ceremony thanked the students and their families for their performance and dedication.

During the 2017-2018 school year, McKinstry provided consulting services to the Hazelwood School District and its community to help develop the district’s five-year strategic plan. McKinstry’s core beliefs include a commitment to innovation, supporting employees, an integrated service delivery model, and long-term relationships forged with clients.
