Learn More About Nicolas’ Experience
I am originally from Pompano Beach, Florida and I am studying Mechanical Engineering at Purdue University. I found McKinstry when I was looking for internships to apply to. The company caught my eye because when I was researching for what McKinstry does, I was impressed with how they were involved in so many different sectors. I thought that an internship here would be a great opportunity to learn and explore different careers pertaining to my major.
I am a part of the Technical Services division at McKinstry located in Tampa, Florida. Our team inspects, monitors, and facilitates the maintenance of HVAC equipment for one of the largest public school districts in the nation in Florida.
Since school is out for the summer and most of the schools are empty, now is the perfect time for schools to perform maintenance, which means our team is very busy. Since I am the only intern at the Tampa office, I have been working on a variety of projects. I began the summer by shadowing a facility operations specialist. We went around to different schools to inspect their HVAC equipment and make sure that they were functioning correctly and being properly maintained. This allowed me to learn the basics of HVAC such as the terminology and basic functions. After a couple of weeks, I was paired with a member of the ActiveOps team to test equipment at schools to make sure that both the equipment and its controls systems were responding properly. Finally, for the last month of my internship, I have been working as a temporary controller for the school district’s office. My role has been to receive work orders and to make sure that the proper resources are being directed to complete the work order.
This summer has been an amazing learning experience. I have been exposed to many different fields, which is exactly what I was hoping for. This experience has introduced me to controls which I am now looking forward to studying in my spring semester. I am still searching for a career that I am truly passionate about, although this experience has taken me once step closer to achieving my goal.
What excites me most about McKinstry’s mission is being able to experience and contribute towards it. I see it being carried out every day by my co-worker’s dedication and work ethic. It is truly amazing to be part of an environment where everyone is devoted to working hard and completing the mission.
