Valley Medical Center
Valley Medical Center (VMC) is Washington State’s first public district hospital and the largest nonprofit healthcare provider between Seattle and Tacoma. VMC serves over 400,000 residents as a regional center operating a network of 12 community clinics throughout King County. VMC has been in operation for over 34 years. During that time the hospital’s main campus and remote clinics have grown and expanded to total over a million square feet of facility space.
McKinstry’s first project with VMC, a fire sprinkler retrofit, dates back to 2001. Since then, McKinstry has assisted VMC with ~18 projects that have called on the expertise of a variety of McKinstry teams – electrical, special projects, service, energy services, fire protection, and major construction.
ENERGY SAVINGS PERFORMANCE CONTRACTING (ESPC) PROJECTS
VMC facilities department’s goal is to upgrade the campus facilities and address infrastructure while saving energy and maximizing available grants and rebates. It was also important to reduce risk while improving operational performance. To acquire the capital necessary to address an aging mechanical and electrical infrastructure, McKinstry has assessed the center’s existing mechanical and electrical systems multiple times and identified potential energy conservation and facility improvement strategies. McKinstry has implemented 18 ESPCs since 2001. The ESPC approach has allowed VMC to reduce both their utility bills and operating costs. The outcome of these projects are significantly reduced utility bills, sizeable utility rebates, and a reduced carbon footprint.
