McKinstry to Partner with UoW, Seattle City Light on “Smart Grid” Energy Project

A $620 million U.S. Department of Energy project designed to build a more efficient energy grid has inspired University of Washington and Seattle City Light to develop a $9.6 million “smart micro grid project” on the university’s Seattle campus. The project is part of $178 million earmarked by Department of Energy for Pacific Northwest projects.
McKinstry Energy Services has been tapped to manage the project, which will involve installation of “smart” electric meters; upgrades to the building management systems of 33 campus facilities; installation of new data management equipment; and installation of monitoring and control equipment in two lab or classroom buildings, and two dormitories.
Seattle City Light Superintendent, Jorge Carrasco, said in a statement: “Advances in this area could help our customers reduce their energy consumption, shorten our restoration times for outages, and increase the overall efficiency of our distribution system.”
