McKinstry Named One of Nation's Top Specialty Contractors by ENR

November 2009

The Construction Weekly Engineering News Record (ENR) named McKinstry 31st overall out of 600 Specialty Contractors in its October 12, 2009 issue.  McKinstry is ranked #5 out of 50 major companies In the Mechanical category.  The 600 Specialty Contractors, grouped by 14 different specialties, were ranked according to construction revenue from specialty contracting in a prime or subcontracting capacity.

According to ENR, specialty contractors believe 2010 will be a difficult year of slow growth following a tough 2009 market. Among the challenges they face: a credit crunch for new products in the private sector stalling the market and the slowdown of the commercial market.

Although the financial crisis has totally disrupted the market, Pacific Northwest is weathering the storm a little better than most of the country, notes David Allen, executive vice president of McKinstry.  He says the aerospace, high-tech, life-sciences and port-and-trade markets in the region are trending higher than in other regions, but not booming.

This is good news for McKinstry, whose vertically integrated offerings in MEDP will allow it to take advantage of jobs experts maintain are available for electrical contractors in energy-efficiency upgrades and energy audits, in addition to such niche markets as data centers.

“The recent development of cloud computing will require more data centers, and they will be built all over the place,” says David Allen.  “They will be sited primarily in parts of the country where power is cheap.”
