CALDWELL – Caldwell breaks ground for two high-performance schools to replace Washington and Van Buren elementary schools.
Officials say the new schools will operate with 30 percent more energy efficiency than codes require and will become Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design certified.
The district hopes the design will provide a better learning environment in schools that are healthy, safe, comfortable, productive and efficient.
The Carnegie Foundation found a direct correlation between indoor comfort and a child’s ability to learn.
McKinstry, a design build contractor, partnered with LKV Architects for the project. Each school is designed for up to 750 students and is expected to cost $10 million.
David Naccarato, business development manager for McKinstry , said the design will save money in the long run. The new schools are projected to cost within 5 percent of a standard “low-bid” elementary school, yet conserve many times that amount in operational efficiency.
“The project will generate about $6 million in energy savings over the next 20 years,” Naccarato said.
Carbon and greenhouse gasses will also be reduced.
