McKinstry Breaks Ground on its new Oregon branch office
October 2007
McKinstry’s commitment to the region and the environment evident with new 115,000 SF facility
Portland, OR (October 11, 2007) – At a ceremonial event in front of over 150 employees and industry partners and with Mt. Hood and the Columbia River wetlands as the backdrop, McKinstry CEO, Dean Allen, and President, Doug Moore broke ground on the company’s new Oregon campus. With revenues and staff expected to more than double in the next five years McKinstry’s planned LEEDTM Gold building will provide the foundation to meet the company’s aggressive goals in the region.
Scheduled for a Fall 2008 completion, the new campus will encompass over 115,000 square feet and located at the intersection of Airport Way and NE Mason Street, east of Portland International Airport. The planned campus will be constructed in phases with the initial phase comprised of two buildings totaling 81,000 SF focused on providing contemporary and ergonomic work areas for its employees and increasing warehouse space. Also included in this first phase is the addition of shop fabrication facilities. Currently fabrication for Oregon projects takes place in McKinstry’s Seattle facility then transported. Doug Moore notes, “The addition of fabrication capabilities in Oregon will significantly increase our operational efficiencies and create new jobs for skilled craftspeople.” Some features of this planned LEED Gold building include: a rainwater collection system, groundwater HVAC system, renewable construction materials, daylighting system, PV panels, high performance glazing and curtain wall, demand control ventilation with outside air monitoring stations, high efficiency heat pump heating and heat recovery unit / waste heat coils. The project team is led by Portland-based General Contractor Hoffman Corporation, design by Mildren Design Group and space planning/interior architecture by Mulvanny G2. McKinstry’s financial partner is Columbia Bank.
Situated on the banks of protected Columbia River wetlands, LEEDTM certification is not the only sustainable goal of the new campus. McKinstry will seize the opportunity to educate its employees and the community of the shared natural surroundings. Dean Allen notes “We plan to work with the community to establish an environmental trail for our employees and the public to not only enjoy the wetlands but to educate each other on our roles in preserving our environment.”
McKinstry is not a newcomer in the Portland market, having opened its first Oregon branch office in 1969. McKinstry has been involved in key Oregon projects including the Oregon Convention Center, Mentor Graphics, Fujitsu, Knight Library, St. Joseph’s Hospital, and Tektronix. McKinstry is currently in the construction of Genentech a 300,000 sq. ft. FDA validated finish and fill pharmaceutical facility located in Hillsboro and 1900 Morrison Burnside Commons, a 144,000 retail/condominium project in downtown Portland. In addition to mechanical construction, McKinstry has a Portland service fleet of nearly 50 vehicles attending to nearly 500 maintenance customers. McKinstry is also a qualified energy services company under the Oregon Public Purpose Funds for Schools program and has partnered with several school districts to increase energy efficiencies to free up funds for academic purposes. A sample of energy service projects include: Salem Keizer Public Schools, Greater Albany Public Schools, Mount Angel School District, Gresham Barlow School District, OSU Hatfield Marine Science Center and George Fox University.
McKinstry’s success in the Puget Sound region is a testament to its ability to self-perform its suite of design, build, operate and maintain service offerings. With this campus, McKinstry is also committed to full deployment of its cycle of services in the Portland area. Dean Allen comments, “Our investment in the new Oregon campus will enable McKinstry to meet the increased demand for our cycle of services and provide a state-of-the-art work environment for our employees. We are committed to being part of the Portland community for decades to come.” Recognized as a preferred place to work by Seattle Business Monthly and Washington CEO Magazine, Doug Moore adds, “by providing a collaborate and sustainable work atmosphere we affirm our commitment to being the preferred place to work for all our employees.” McKinstry’s growth in Portland, the expansion of its Spokane office and recent office openings in Tacoma, Washington and Boise, Idaho affirms McKinstry’s commitment to being the premier mechanical DBOM firm in the region.
