Muskego-Norway School District partners with McKinstry on energy efficiency upgrades
March 2010
District Expected to Save $100,493 Annually in Utility Costs
Madison, WI (3/12/10) – While the status of school funding in the state of Wisconsin remains unclear, the Muskego-Norway School District is moving forward with plans that will reduce its present and future operating costs. In partnership with McKinstry, a local design-build expert, the District is making a number of upgrades to improve systems efficiency and shore up ageing infrastructure at five of its school buildings.
"These projects will meet several goals identified by the school board,” notes Muskego-Norway’s Director of Business Services Scot Ecker. “First, it meets a core commitment we have made to our community of 'providing a quality education while being fiscally responsible'. The projects also meet one of our strategic objectives, 'Maintain financial stability while improving cost-effectiveness and resource management. This partnership is particularly exciting because it is rare that a school district is able to complete capital projects that will both enhance the learning environment and provide ongoing cost savings, benefiting both students and the entire district community."
Upgrades are to include boiler system replacement and installation of vending machine “miser” controls to conserve energy for Bay Lane Middle School; building envelope improvements and upgrades of interior lightening systems to Lake Denoon Middle School; building envelope improvements, controls ventilation for the gym, interior lighting upgrades, installation of more efficiently flushing toilets and low flow aerators on sink faucets, an automatic swimming pool cover, and installation of miser controller on vending machines and at Muskego High School.
According to McKinstry project team these enhancements will be complete by the time school begins next fall. All work is being performed over summer break so classes will not be interrupted. Taken together these upgrades are expected to save 1,121 metric tons of CO2 annually, and help the district realize annual operational savings for the schools of $21,614. The total cost of the project would be paid back in 10 years from energy savings, estimates McKinstry versus a payback period of 14 years with a regular loan.
