Garden Valley School proceeds with biomass-fueled furnace
February 2010
Boise, ID (2/8/10) – Garden Valley School, the largest building in Boise County, is going ahead with plans for a biomass-fuelled furnace. Local design-build expert McKinstry, a leader in renewables and energy source solutions, has partnered with architect /engineer CSHQA on the project, which will involve building a chip storage facility, modifying a boiler room, and installing a woody biomass boiler in the newly constructed Pre K-12 school.
McKinstry is the general contractor for the project, and will provide engineering and mechanical contracting services; CSHQA will provide on-site construction administration assistance, as well as, structural, civil and electrical engineering services. McKinstry worked with the U.S. Department of Agriculture to secure $3 million in funding via the American Reinvestment and Recovery Act to convert the school heating system into a biomass-fueled plant utilizing locally acquired wood chips. The project, which is being executed as a performance contract, is guaranteed by McKinstry to save both cost and energy.
CSHQA has been involved with the School District since 1993. The company designed the original school facility, and diligently worked to ensure that the school’s design would accommodate the new system. The new $11 million facility, which celebrated its grand opening August 1, 2009, replaces an overcrowded, multi-structure campus of buildings.
