Monona Grove School district upgrades nearing completion
January 2010
Cost Savings Already Being Realized; Teachers and Students Gain Further Understanding of Usage through McKinstry’ Resource Conservation Management, KEEP Workshop
Madison, WI (1/18/10) – McKinstry has completed three‐quarters of the energy efficiency improvements at Monona Grove High School, Winnequah, Cottage Grove, and Taylor Prairie Elementary Schools identified as part of the energy saving program. Over the last three months, these upgrades have saved the school district in excess of $30,000 putting it on track to meet or exceed the savings goals.
The improvements, which McKinstry identified in March 2009, included lighting, building automation and envelope upgrades, recommissioning, and the introduction of an active energy management program. McKinstry has implemented active energy management programs in many school districts nation wide. Data gathered from these programs is frequently adapted by teachers as part of their school curricula, imparting McKinstry’s message of efficiency first and sound environmental stewardship to students.
In September MG&E, Alliant, and McKinstry provided scholarships for Monona Grove School District educators to attend KEEP (K
‐12 Energy Education Program), a school building energy efficiency education workshop. Nine teachers from the District participated in the program which was intended to help educators inspire students to think about energy conservation, usage, how to evaluate their energy bills, and discover ways to cut individual energy use.
"We hope this workshop not only marks the beginning of continuous energy education opportunities within the District, but encourages new initiatives and energy activism," said Tom Laufenberg, McKinstry’s Midwest Regional Manager.
For Monona Grove the journey towards a more energy efficient school district was made possible in March, 2009 when it approved, by unanimous vote, a $2 Million performance contract with McKinstry. During an impassioned presentation before the School Board, students of Monona Grove School District produced a petition of more than 400 names – over half the school’s population – in support of the energy savings program.
