Albany ISD Achieves Significant Energy Savings As A Result Of Facility Upgrades

McKinstry surprises Albany ISD leaders with rebate check

ALBANY, Texas (June 21, 2017) – Albany ISD has already begun to reap the benefits of its partnership with McKinstry, a national firm specializing in building energy efficient and operationally sound construction, after the firm made numerous upgrades in the district to reduce its utility spending and deliver long-term facility solutions.

The total savings for the first year is estimated to be more than $53,000, with $38,126 in annual utility savings and $15,609 in annual operations and maintenance savings. McKinstry representatives presented Albany ISD with a utility rebate check during a surprise ceremony on June 19.

After performing a thorough evaluation of the district’s facility systems and operating and capital expenditures, McKinstry replaced more than 30 HVAC units, upgraded the lighting system, installed wireless network thermostats and implemented water conservation measures – which included retro-commissioning water fixtures. When combined, these energy upgrades will pay for themselves expediently and help offset facility improvements with longer payback periods.

Due to the district’s rural location and size, Albany ISD was awarded low-interest federal funding for the energy renovations through a Qualified Zone Academy Bond (QZAB), which allowed the district to do more construction with less required capital. McKinstry assisted the district throughout the QZAB process and applied for utility rebates on behalf of the district.

“Part of Albany ISD’s ongoing commitment to providing the highest quality educational experience includes maintaining and upgrading our facilities regularly and efficiently,” said Shane Fields, Albany ISD Superintendent. “Not only will these new renovations enable us to better that experience, the energy savings will provide us with the means to reinvest funds into our students.”

During the project, Albany ISD and McKinstry implemented an educational project called “The STRIVE Academy,” an online resource for students, faculty and the community that will provide access to cutting-edge learning materials. The Academy was designed to complement the facility improvement program so students can witness the impact of the latest efficient technology in their learning environment while also studying the results the improvements have made in their schools.

“McKinstry is extremely proud to partner with Albany ISD as it continues to set a standard of excellence for rural education,” said Skip Woessner, McKinstry project director. “We believe these energy savings and The STRIVE Academy will provide school faculty with the means to deliver an enduring educational environment for these students.”
