Tukwila 5 Data Center
This large Redmond-based software provider needed to expand its data center to increase the space for a new user group and the quality of service they provide. McKinstry performed the mechanical, electrical, data, and plumbing (MEDP) as well as commissioning for the project.
This project consisted of 24,000 sq. ft. of dedicated server floor and network space. Mechanical scope included 2 air cooled chillers with a pump skid and 6 exhaust fans on the roof, 4 air handling units on the 2nd floor serving cooling into the data center, and 2 generators. We also provided evaporative cooling to further cool the space. The communication scope included the installation of communications cabling & infrastructure in a 16,500 Sq Ft Co-Location. Electrical scope included the installation of three 2.5 Megawatt Generators, paralleling switchgear, 3000kVA UPS, 10 Roof Top Units, and a 16,500 Sq Ft Co-Location.
A helicopter pick was necessary in order to place the equipment on the roof and we worked with the FAA to approve a well coordinated plan to perform this function. Crews on the roof coordinated with crews on the ground with the equipment and successfully and safely executed the plan all in the span of 5 hours (8am-1pm).
Lewis leaned heavily on McKinstry’s Safety and “Lock Out Tag Out” programs to maintain safe protocols for the many firms involved with the energization and commissioning of the new equipment to meet the client’s standards. The project was extremely fast paced and McKinstry was able to provide the staffing and flexible work shifts to meet the compressed schedule. McKinstry’s strong crew received recognition on the quality of workmanship from all parties involved.
